Abstract

In order to assist designers in the process of developing products and to assist recycling and dismantling companies in planning of the economical and ecological targets of his work, a methodology and a software system was developed that contains tools to support the whole process chain, beginning from design to end-of-life.
Based first on the Recycling-Graph-Editor (ReGrEd), which is a software system for the evaluation and optimisation of products recyclability in all design phases related to VDI 2221, and second on a CAD based workbench for the embodiment design and detail design for recycling a short control cycle for the product optimisation is realised.
A further Recycling-Data-Management-System (ReDaMa) integrates functionality in order to hold data during the entire life-cycle of products from the engineering de-sign, over production and use, up to the end-of-life. This data, which does not include secure information’s from companies product development, is placed on servers on the internet, where recycling companies can get the recycling related product data for planning the economic of different possibilities in recycling and evaluate the optimal alternative related to economic aspects.
The central module of the software system is the Recycling-Graph-Editor, which permits the modelling of a product by an abstract visualisation of the product structure and manages the necessary recycling-related data by so-called “Recycling-Graphs”. It makes the functionality available to create and modify the graph and controls further modules for the performance of multiple analyses. By the different modules the analysis of weak points in design for recycling are shown through abstract and colorized representations of the product structure and making plain of con-sequences in design chances related to economical, technical and ecological aspects.
The mentioned workbench, which is based on the commercial CAD system Pro/ENGINEER supports the designer in the synthesis process and by delivering necessary data for the different analyses - already during the design of a product - performed in ReGrEd considering the complex requirements of recycling and disassembly. It accesses hereby a recycling-oriented product model which extends those who are available in commercially CAD-Systems and supplies an interface to the ReGrEd.
The module ReDaMa was developed for the management of data which are created during the design phase and needed later for the disassembly planning of products. ReDaMa is an engineering network based data management system which allows to create, hold and complete necessary data during the entire life-cycle for later supply with disassembly- and recycling-planning.
