Typically, a limited number of water cooled copper blocks with fins are installed at electric arc furnace (EAF) lining hot spots above or at the slag level; however, the installation of these blocks over the entire slag line has recently been proposed and is under trial to increase the refractory lifetime. To investigate the feasibility of this design concept, numerical simulations were performed to determine the impact of water cooled blocks in EAF refractory liningson teh temperature distribution, heat transfer, and vessel energy balance. The calculated additional specific energy loss resulting from 16-20 cooling blocks being installed in the permanent refractory linings of eight different industrial EAFs ranged from 5-0-9.3 kWh/t, depending on vessel geometry, tap temperature, and tap weight. These figures equated to additional EAF operating energy costs of 0.32-0.61 €/t. These extra energy requirements have to be included in teh cost calculations for water cooled copper blocks to provide a representative figure for comparison with the anticipated refractory savings.
