Abstract

Under arid or semiarid conditions fluvial systems are considered to react particularly sensitive to environmental changes. Also the rivers in the dry Savanna regions of northeastern Nigeria are increasingly affected by impacts on hydrology and riverbed dynamics. Examplified by the Gongola-Basin present-day fluvial processes were examined in order to determine the extend of morphological change which the rivers experienced during the last decades and to reveal the controlling environmental factors. The results show, that despite a general decrease in precipitation amount, young erosional processes are an omnipresent phenomenon in the study area. Especially the smaller rivers belonging to the Gongola system are actually not in a state of equilubrium. Although the channel network is loaded by a huge supply of run-off and sediments resulting from overland flow and soil erosion on the adjacent slopes, steeper river reaches are capable to entrench their courses. Where gradient decreases, sedimentation takes place and a distinct braidening occurs. The investigations reveal that this river response is caused by severe ecological degradation processes, wich are not the result of climatic changes but are due to intensive utilization under fragile geoecological conditions. If this strong human impact continues the morphodynamic processes will increase and further negative effects on the ecological conditions of the study area can be expected.
