The time response of mass-sensitive chemical sensors such as surface acoustic wave (SAW) The time response of mass-sensitive chemical sensors such as surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices or quartz crystal microbalances (QMB) tends to be quite slow because the chemical species to be bound in the selective sensor film diffuses into the film with characteristic diffusion coefficients on the order of only 10^(-17) m²/s. In order to reduce the effective response time of the sensor, one must resort to signal processing strategies capable of predicting the steady-state response soon after a concentration change. This contribution presents an analytic model which may be used at the core of such a prediction algorithm. The model is valid for all mass-sensitive sensors the dynamic behavior of which is dominated by diffusion effects. [...]
