Film-forming functionalized poly(p-xylylene)s (PPXs) were synthesized by vapor-phase pyrolysis of 4-dichloromethyl-toluenes and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of the pyrolysis products followed by their spontaneous polymerization. These PPXs served as precursor polymers which were converted to poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) by thermally induced HCl elimination. Following this route, film-forming PPVs with cyano- and chloro-substituents in the alpha-position were obtained by polymer-analogous conversion of the corresponding PPX precursor polymers.
