Abstract

Speaking about HIV/AIDS involves the use of verbal and visual practices of depiction in order to communicate subjective illness theories concerning AIDS/HIV. The paper is based on a video recording of a face-to-face interview with a homosexual, HIV-positive man. After a short discussion of the concept ‘subjective illness theory‘ the exemplary analysis shows multimodal practices in the narrative reconstruction of a dream used to communicate the subjective conceptualization of the character and the treatment of the HIV-infection. The analysis of the dream narrative on the one hand gives access to the subjective understanding of the illness, on the other hand it informs about, structural, pragmatic, communicative and multimodal dimension of conversational narration about illnesses.
