Abstract

Electron diffraction was used to study the stoichiometric dependence of the modulation wave vector in the incommensurately modulated structures of ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img9.gif - and ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img10.gif . For ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img11.gif and ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img12.gif the space group of the basic structure is Pmmn, and the superspace group characterizing the one-dimensionally modulated structure is found to be ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img13.gif . The stoichiometry dependence of the modulation wave vector q can be described by a staircase function, with ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img14.gif being constant at ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img15.gif for ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img16.gif . A second plateau has been observed in the stability field of ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img10.gif for ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img18.gif with ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img19.gif . For the stoichiometry range ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img20.gif varies continuously between ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img19.gif and ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img22.gif . In the present paper we will show that the system ##IMG## http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/9/29/008/img23.gif can be described by an extended Frenkel - Kontorova model. Despite its extreme simplicity in the one-dimensional case, the model exhibits most of the features necessary for understanding the variation of the dependence of the modulation wave vector on the lithium stoichiometry.
