Compositions of coexisting liquidsin binary SiO2-TiO2, alkaline earth CaO-SiO2-TiO2, MgO-SiO2-TiO2,CaO-MgO-SiO2-TiO2, and Al-bearing SiO2-TiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2-Al2O3 systems have been determined providing direct constraints to non-ideal solution parameters.
The excess Gibbs free energy of the melt in binary systems have been modelled with subregular solution parameters. Experimental solvus data in the quaternary STMS system are reproduced in detail with weighted extrapolation of binary excess terms. The minimum number of additional ternary parameters permits stable extrapolation both in temperature and composition outside the calibration range.
Thermodynamic modelling of liquidus and solvus data in teh STAC system suggests that (1) the extrapolation behaviour of binary excess polynomials depends on the added components and (2) binary excess terms contribute to a minor degree to the excess free energy of the melt at low Al2O3 compositions
