Abstract
Australia is frequently affected by extreme weather events, leading to bushfires or flooding. These events are likely to increase in intensity and frequency as a result of climate change (IPCC 2022). The floods that struck Queensland and NSW in early 2022 have been described as “the most devastating in the nation’s history” (Australian Government National Emergency Management Agency 2023), reaching water levels of up to 14.4 meters in the town of Lismore, breaking the cities past water level records from 1954 and 1974 by more than 2 meters (Lismore City Council 2023). The floods have affected over 20.000 homes of which around 3.000 were located in Lismore (IAG 2023).
House and contents insurance is one mechanism to help people deal with the effects of extreme weather events such as the 2022 flooding. The increase of these events leads to a situation in which homes will not be insurable or that premiums will increase so much that people will not be able to afford insurance anymore (Actuaries Institute 2022; Climate Council 2022).
