Abstract

Ferrocenes bearing dialkylaluminum substituents in the 1,1′-positions were characterized as their dipyridine adducts, and it was shown that they can be transformed into dinuclear alkylaluminum-bridged [1.1]ferrocenophanes and finally into the trinuclear aluminum-bridged ferrocenophane, both as dipyridine adducts. The synthesis of the latter compound was optimized and found to be most efficient (>40 % yield) through the reaction of 1,1′-dilithioferrocene with MeAlCl2. The molecular structures of the dinuclear and trinuclear complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. The solution-state structures of the new compounds were studied by multinuclear magnetic resonance methods, including 1H–1H NOE difference experiments.
