Bien que les médias soient des vecteurs importants dans l’évolution du français en Afrique subsaharienne, leur rôle dans cette dynamique linguistique n’a pas encore fait l’objet d’une réflexion systématique. Ce premier chapitre, qui fait fonction d’introduction, vise à ébaucher la problématique, en la situant à la fois dans un contexte linguistique et médiatique. Après une discussion des différentes acceptions théoriques de la notion-clef de « média », seront esquissées quelques caractéristiques des paysages médiatiques de l’Afrique subsaharienne. Ensuite seront identifiés des aspects typiques de la francophonie africaine – plurilinguisme, taux élevé d’analphabétisme et connaissances très variables en français, la langue officielle – qui trouvent leur écho dans les médias. Un aperçu des recherches sur le français dans les médias qui dépasse le cadre spécifique de la francophonie africaine complète ce tour d’horizon. Le chapitre se termine par une présentation des contributions réunies dans ce collectif.
Abstract in another language
Even though the media play an important part in French’s evolution in sub-Saharan Africa, their role in this linguistic dynamics has not been investigated systematically so far. This introductory chapter aims to give a first outline of the problem by situating it both in a linguistic and a media perspective. A discussion of different theoretical meanings of the key notion of “media” will be followed by some characteristics of sub-Saharan media landscapes. Then typical sociolinguistic features of French speaking countries in Africa like multilingualism, high degree of illiteracy, and very variable proficiency in French, the official language, will be identified, since they all find their echo in the media landscape. An overview of research on French in the media which transcends the case of African countries completes this general survey. The chapter ends with a presentation of the contributions compiled in this book.
