The unusual grinding effects observed in the 1D spin crossover polymer [FeL(bipy)]n (1), with L being a tetradentate N2O22– coordinating Schiff base type ligand {(3,3′)-[1,2-phenylenebis(iminomethylidyne)]bis(2,4-pentanedionato)(2–)-N,N′,O2,O2′} and bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, are investigated using magnetic measurements, X-ray powder diffraction and optical reflectivity studies. The observed behaviour can be explained when solvent effects are taken into account.
