Abstract in another language
This article is looking at modalities of the intermedial-performance Jerusalem [Holocene # 1.2] by the Belgian group Berlin. Partly a staged concert, partly a multi-screen installation of a city’s documentary the performance's topic emerges as the unsettled conflict between Israel and Palastine. Interestingly, the performance deconstructs its own documentary status, as well as it’s own narrative set-up and in doing so, it questions a conventional understanding of the past represented or related to histories and narrations (Jenkins/Taylor).
In a deconstructivist reading, intermedial storytelling in Berlin’s work evokes the productiveness of the past’s absence. Moments of silence, the interplay of a documentary style and a warm concert-like atmosphere established by Peter Van Fairhaven’s composition for Jewish-Arabian traditional instruments open up a space for reflection about the unsettled past. Systematically, this leads us towards the question, how intermediality in performance, quite in contrast to the concept of ‘remediation’ (Bolter/Grusin), supersedes and resists coherent narratives of history.
