Inseln sind weit mehr als vermeintlich isolierte, vom Wasser umgebene Orte. Sie liegen als Knotenpunkte an den Schnittstellen globaler Migrations- und Transportrouten, gelten als Traumziele touristischer Reisen, sind Hotspots der Biodiversität oder Spielball geopolitischer Konflikte. Das Heft wirft entlang weltweiter Beispiele einen Blick auf kleine Inseln und das dortige Zusammenspiel zwischen Mensch und Umwelt. Wie durch eine Lupe hindurch lassen sich dabei anthropogene und natürliche Prozesse beobachten, die uns Auskunft über die großen Themen geben, die unsere Welt in ihrem heutigen Zustand prägen.
Abstract in another language
Islands are far more than isolated places surrounded by water. As nodal points of our planet, they lie at the intersection of global migration and transport routes, are considered dream destinations for tourist trips, hotspots of biodiversity, but also pawns in geopolitical conflicts. In a world of global interconnectedness and resulting processes of homogeneity, small islands stand out as heterogenous places with particular dynamics of developments regarding
social and natural process with future implications beyond the island. The special issue engages with human-environment-interactions on small island of the globe. It invites the readers to engage with the world’s smallest places with a perspective that puts the multiple variations of human-and-nature induced processes on islands in a relational perspective, acknowledging the openness and connectedness of islands in a constantly changing world.
