Abstract in another language
This article addresses one of the major challenges for modern universities and thus for Intercultural German Studies: Since the Bologna reforms, university students should not only be qualified academically, but to a greater extent also professionally. However, these reforms are often considered as a threat to the Humboldtian ideal of combining teaching and research, which is still highly valued at German universities as the key to Bildung. Research-based teaching and learning, as one of the most important new approaches to didactics in higher education, offers the opportunity to combine professional qualification and humanistic education. The paper follows up on this discussion and investigates the different types of research-based teaching and learning in order to identify teaching formats well-suited for the promotion of academic as well as practice-oriented competencies. The seminar »Linguistic appropriateness as a key in intercultural communication« from the MA-program Intercultural German Studies at the University of Bayreuth is to show how to link research and professional orientationand to implement it in academic teaching practice. The article closes with a summary and a brief outlook on further ideas for improving research- and practice-oriented teaching in Intercultural German Studies.
