Abstract in another language
This chapter further develops Talal Asad's concept of orthodoxy as an analytical tool for a discursive approach. While the notion of orthodoxy has been contested for good reasons, the author suggests a strictly empirical and multi-dimensional understanding that takes the variety of social power structures and patterns of legitimisation into account. Based on two different research settings, one being online debates among young Muslims in Germany, and the other the life of Uyghur Muslim communities in Xinjiang in the 2000s, she not only demonstrates that patterns of Sunni Muslim orthodoxy are contingent and diverge, but also proposes a heuristic concept that differentiates between various dimensions of orthodoxy.
