Abstract in another language
This paper, based upon the study of original archives, analyzes the mechanisms of colonial repression in Southern Tunisia in the context of French occupation. It focuses particularly on how women were targeted and on the nature of the various phases of repression. It underlines both the significant role of females in resistance and their importance in local and regional networks. The paper also addresses the question of the communication by networks of resistance between the various formerly Ottoman provinces that were occupied by France and Italy. It discusses, too, the relationship between early resistance networks in the South and the emergence of the national movement in Tunisia, as well as communication between Tunis, Southern Tunisia and Tripoli in the context of French and Italian repressive actions.
