Abstract
The development of African theatre has been linked to tribal myths, lore, and religious ritual observance, with one of the prerequisites for theatre production in modern times being playwriting. The “act” and “practice” of playwriting are often described as exclusive to the already knowledgeable such that artists often rely on writers’ expertise to create performances. Despite this, other techniques have emerged in play devising and scripting to accommodate more all-inclusive forms; one such is the emergence of “Aruku-Improv,” birthed in Nigeria. Aruku-Improv is a linguistic collocation of two words, “Aruku” and “Improv.” The term “Aruku” is not linguistically associated with any dialect; instead, it is a colloquial form for improvisation and economic survival. This script and performance devising technique as an offshoot of the African Total Theatre developed as an unintended response to certain socio-educational practices and performance demands of the post-independence era. The practice comes generally out of non-conventional Nigerian theatre practice and specifically out of the Theatre for Development (TFD), the repertory theatre in Nigeria, and the academic circles involved in the transition from pre- to post-Nigerian independence. This chapter documents the meaning, etymology, and artistic approaches to applying the Aruku-Improv dramaturgy. The chapter will help develop a new generation of creative writers, with educators exploring an alternative pedagogical form.
