Abstract

In this work a potentiometric NOx sensor based on polycrystalline nitrosyl cation conducting β"-Al2O3 (NO+-β"-Al2O3) is presented. Main part of this sensor is a nitrosyl cation conducting membrane generating a potential difference between different NO partial pressures by the reaction NO <->NO+ + e-. The sensor was situated as separator between a reference gas and a measuring gas. The nernstian behaviour with the Nernst’s slope close to n=1 was found (n is the number of electrons involved in the reaction). This Nernstian behavior was verified in a NO partial pressure range of 10 to 1000 Pa (100-10000 ppm NO) with several reference partial pressures. The cross sensitivity of the sensor to oxygen, water and other gaseous compounds of the atmosphere was determined and found to be as low as expected from an selective ion conductor. Sensor setups for practical applications were tested.
