abstractEnvironmental conditions and land use management have changed in the past and continue to change in the future. Ecosystem ecology has the task and challenge to investigate the relation between environmental conditions, land use, structural components of the ecosystem and ecosystem function. The results can be used to define and test criteria of sustainable use and are of relevance for air pollution strategies, water and land use management as well as for environmental protection. As an example for the studies done at the Bayreuth Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystem Research (BITÖK), the effects of changing deposition of S, N, Ca and Mg in a forested watershed of the Fichtelgebirge area (Germany) are summarized. Recent findings on feedbacks between deposition, soil chemical conditions, plant nutrition, litter decomposition and seepage output indicate the strong influence of the deposition of mineral elements on ecosystem functioning. In summary, findings of ecosystem ecology revealed that criteria of sustainable use are still not matched in many European forest ecosystems which calls for action in air pollution strategies and ecosystem management. ZusammenfassungDie Umweltbedingungen und die Nutzung von Ökosystemen haben sich in der Vergangenheit verändert und werden sich in Zukunft weiter verändern. Die Aufgabe und die Herausforderung für die Ökosystemforschung liegt in der Quantifizierung der Zusammenhänge zwischen Umweltbedingungen und strukturellen Eigenschaften der Ökosysteme einerseits und deren Funktion andererseits. Die Ergebnisse der Ökosystemforschung erfahren eine Anwendung in der Luftreinhaltung, der Forst- und Wasserwirtschaft sowie im Naturschutz.
