Abstract

Oxo-alcohols are amongst the most important raw materials for the production of high volume plasticizers in chemical industry. C6 – C12 aldehydes from hydroformylation are hydrogenated on suitable heterogeneous catalysts to gain those alcohols which are further processed to the corresponding plasticizers. During hydrogenation the formation side components like ester, acetal or other high boiling components has a major influence on the product quality. The influence of process control, feed quality and catalyst properties on side reactions is only sporadically described in literature. Against the background of the high economical potential of an increased alcohol yield and higher catalyst lifetime the formation of side components was investigated under hydrogenation conditions close to the industrial process. Nonyl aldehyde was chosen as model substance feed. Reaction products were analyzed by means of GC / GC-MS measurements. The catalyst was characterized via TEM, EDX, XRD and BET. Regenerations experiments for deactivated catalyst were conducted based on thermogravimetric analysis. The catalyst was treated at two different temperatures under either nitrogen or controlled oxygen atmosphere. Subsequent hydrogenation showed a fully restored catalyst activity. Based on the conducted experiments guidelines where formulated to ensure lower influence of high boiling side components that lead to higher catalyst stability and yields in the production of plasticizer alcohols. On the basis of the derived experimental data a procedure for the regeneration of
deactivated catalyst was described.
