Abstract

Engineers are using special design tools and methodologies within the product development process. The questions are: Are these established tools really integrated within common FEA? Are the true needs and demands of engineers considered adequately? Is it possible to consider different levels of users' basic-knowledge?
The systematic analysis of the needs, the use of support tools, and their functional range according to the respective users' demands - engineers - was performed with the result that most of delays within engineering design result from insufficient pre- and postpreparation of the necessary or provided information. Current challenges are the lack of conjunctions between common software tools and its resulting interface problems, the lack of best practice which supports the user without constricting his creativity, the absence of retrieval opportunities from formerly projects and search routines for analogies just to specify a few.
