To investigate impacts on thermo-mechanical loads damaging cutting tools a Finite Element Analysis approach in SIMULIA Abaqus have successfully been used. Using know-how in application of these finite element models, it has become possible to deal with complicated conditions occurring in the shear zone.
In this research an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE)-approach is applicated to simulate the continuous chip formation process in orthogonal cutting. It allowed to gain deep insights in influences of the cutting edge radius on cutting force and temperature based to optimize geometric and cutting parameters.
