Abstract
Research appraises that the substandard management of complexity is one of the commonreasons for IT project failure. As such, companies need to improve their management of complexity. However, doing so requires an unambiguous understanding of what is meant by complexity, which has not yet been examined. In this study, we therefore strive to provide conceptual clarity regarding the construct complexity, by considering causalities of complexity aspects presented in extant literature. We develop a two-dimensional framework based on generic complexity antecedents and ontext-specific project areas. We evaluate its racticability by drawing on semi-structured interviews with IT project management experts. The resulting framework will help researchers and practitioners to understand how complexity can occur in IT projects, as it provides insights into what causes complexity and where it is located within an IT project. Furthermore, it provides a basis for the development of appropriate management strategies and uantification methods for complexity.
