The installation of water cooled copper blocks over the entire slag line of electric arc furnace linings has recently been proposed and is under trial with a view to increasing refractory lifetime. However, the additional specific energy loss resulting from 16 to 20 cooling copper blocks equalled additional energy costs of up to 0.61 Euros/t of liquid steel. These extra energy requirements have to be included in the cost calculations for water cooled copper blocks to provide an accurate figure for comparison with the anticipated refractory savings.
