Off-gas measurements were conducted at industrial Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) in Germany in order to investigate the interrelation of NOx emission with plant equipment and process data. Measurements were carried out simultaneously at the EAF elbow and at the primary hot gas duct of the dedusting plant, after complete post-combustion of EAF off-gas. From the measurements the contribution of post-combustion of EAF off-gas in the dedusting system to total NOx emission is distinguished. NOx formation by uncontrolled post-combustion of EAF off-gas outside the furnace is considerable. Besides post-combustion of EAF off-gas at the hot gas duct of dedusting system, main sources of NOx formation are: 1. NOx formation in the electric arc plasma during start-up time of the melting process in oxidising furnace atmosphere after charging of the furnace. 2. NOx formation from post-combustion of CO/CO2/H2 gas with air inside and outside the furnace. The positive effect of minimum volume flow rate of air into the furnace by controlled off-gas extraction to total NOx emission is shown.
