Abstract

In Uganda, it is rare for someone to speak openly about AIDS-related deaths, especially to children. Similarly, parents living with HIV usually find it hard to discuss their diagnosis openly with their children. As a result, a wall of silence is created around the experience of AIDS orphanhood. Even though ‘AIDS orphans’ are accustomed to probing about the whereabouts of their parents, several of them are almost always uncomfortable with the encounter. While others state the cause explicitly as AIDS, albeit reluctantly, others conjure up a fascinating tale or claim ignorance of the actual reason for their parents’ demise. This thesis takes a historical approach to the AIDS epidemic in Uganda to uncover the origin and evolution of this silence. The study also explores the role of stigma in cultivating this silence and argues that there is not one but different kinds of silences around this experience. I have also reasoned that the silences are not as problematic as has been commonly understood but rather that they may have several uses for those dealing with AIDS-related deaths. I conclude by reflecting on the various reasons and implications of these silences to the affected AIDS orphans.
