Abstract in another language
We have employed a Michelson laser interferometer to investigate RF oscillations of quartz plates. By combining the measured amplitudes of certain harmonics in the interferometer output spectrum, we were able to determine the absolute value of the quartz vibration amplitude without having to calibrate the system. Auxiliary vibrations in the interferometer reference mirror were used to reduce the required detector bandwidth and to improve the detection limit of the system. The final setup was capable of detecting vibration amplitudes in the sub-nm range.
