Abstract

Global warming is a major challenge, as renewable energies only contributed 21 % to the heating sector in 2018, although this sector accounts for over 50 % of final energy consumption in Europe [1]. To improve sustainability, the integration of high-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) into renewable energy systems, like geothermal or industrial waste heat applications, is a promising approach. In this context, an experimental evaluation of the part-load behaviour of a 35 kW HTHP on a laboratory scale is con-ducted. Based on the results a simulation model is developed and validated for further thermo-economic analyses. The examined HTHP uses the hydroclorofluoroolefin (HCFO) refrigerant R1233zd(E) with low global warming potential (GWP) and low ozone depletion potential (ODP). In order to investigate the waste heat utilization of the compressor and therefore improve the system performance, water-cooled cylinder heads are installed. This study analyses the effects of cylinder head cooling on discharge gas temperature and thus decreasing thermal load, heat dissipation and overall system efficiency. As a result, the discharge gas temperature can be reduced by up to 29 K and the COP increased by up to 8 %. The results also provide indications for economic and technical optimisation with regard to renewable peak load coverage and higher thermal output in renewable energy systems.
