Abstract
All things being equal, a firm would rather not behave entrepreneurially. Doing so entails significant risk, operating in uncertainty, and committing resources to projects whose outcomes are difficult to predict. However, not behaving entrepreneurially is equally problematic—if the firm does not innovate, at least at the pace of its industry, over time, it will die. We argue that firms embrace this paradox by using entrepreneurial orientation as a mechanism to address environmental uncertainty and attempt to gain control over their operating condition. In a multimethod design, we find evidence of firms modifying their entrepreneurial orientation in response to changing environmental conditions.
