Abstract in another language
Understanding the impacts of environmentalchanges on species survival is a major challenge inecological research, especially when shifting from singletomultispecies foci. Here, we apply a spatially explicit twospeciessimulation model to analyze the effects ofgeographic range shifting and habitat isolation on differentcoexistence mechanisms. The model explicitly considersdispersal, local competition, and growth on a singleresource. Results highlight that both range shifting andhabitat isolation severely impact coexistence. However, thestrength of these impacts depends on the underlyingcoexistence mechanisms. Neutrally coexisting species areparticularly sensitive to habitat isolation, while stabilizedcoexistence through overcompensatory density regulation ismuch more sensitive to range shifting. We conclude that, atthe community level, the response to environmental changesensitively depends on the underlying coexistence mechanisms. This suggests that predictions and managementrecommendations should consider differences betweenneutral versus stabilized community structures wheneverpossible.
