Abstract in another language
Microwave sintering (2,45 GH) of high purity alumina (>98%) yields different microstructures as compared to conventional sintering methods. However the occurence of such «microwave effects» as, e.g., significantly decreased sintering or reaction temperatures, is connected to certain experimental conditions. A systematic investigation of the late stage sintering using different sintering parameters and additives has been undertaken in order to identify the origin of microwave effects. The main effect is caused by aliovalent additives, which display some solubility in Al2O3. Grain boundary segregation of secondary phases discriminates this microwave effect
