Abstract in another language

Over the last decades the forestry sciences have been opened fornew topics and methods. In addition to traditional forestry topicsthey have participated in environmental and ecosystem research. Sofar this type of research has been perceived as “applied”. From themodelling perspective there has been a misunderstanding amongthe participating disciplines of the character of knowledge beingapplied. Here we introduce two types of models of forest utilizationand discuss their possibilities and limits for forestry sciences. Thefirst perspective of forests is the one dominating in modellingtoday and in forestry sciences. It has been adopted from physics. The second perspective of forests has implicitly been adopted inthe past for pragmatic reasons. Recently it has got a formal analoguein computer science. These two concepts of modelling providethe background against which we interpret and discuss thealleged recent crisis in the forestry sciences.
