The environmental friendly design of products becomes increasingly important for enterprises because in the last years environmental aspects move both in the eyes of the customers and in legislative regulations more and more into the centre of the attention.
Beyond that it is proven by numerous examples of environmental conscious products, that straight by an ecologically aligned product development, characteristics can be achieved, which offer rich and also economic advantages far beyond the environmental aspect. These benefits are advantageous both for the participants of the economic life and for the final customers. For this reason the market is prepared for an establishment of environmental friendly products.
The question is: How it is possible for small and medium enterprises to integrate environmental aspects in their design process to get environmental aware products and further product innovations at the same time?

Die umweltfreundliche Gestaltung von Erzeugnissen gewinnt für Unternehmen zunehmend an Bedeutung, denn Umweltaspekte rücken sowohl in den Augen der Kunden als auch in gesetzgeberischen Regelungen in den letzten Jahren mehr und mehr in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit.
Darüber hinaus ist durch zahlreiche Beispiele von umweltgerechten Produkten belegt, dass gerade durch eine ökologisch ausgerichtete Produktentwicklung gleichsam Eigenschaften erreicht werden können, die weit über den Umweltaspekt hinaus reichen und somit auch ökonomische Vorteile sowohl für die Akteure des Wirtschaftslebens als auch für die Endkunden bieten. Damit wird einer Etablierung umweltgerechter Erzeugnisse der Markt bereitet.
Aus diesem Grund werden in diesem Beitrag Entwicklungsmuster und -hemmnisse bei der Entwicklung umweltgerechter Produkte analysiert und daraus Vorschläge für eine umweltinnovative Produktentwicklung abgeleitet werden.
