The ex-president Dilma Rousseff’s Worker’s Party (PT) is the clear loser in Brazil’s municipal elections following her suspension from office. In a fragmented party-political scene, political outsiders emerge as the victors. This trend might persist in the 2018 national elections. In this election for the first time, corporate donations were banned as an anticorruption measure. Rich candidates benefited from this new legislation. Furthermore, candidates from the Pentecostal churches capitalised on the sentiment of antagonism towards politics. The political and economic crisis has undermined the voters’ political confidence for some time to come.

Die Arbeiterpartei PT von Ex-Präsidentin Dilma Rousseff ist nach deren Amtsenthebung klarer Verlierer der Kommunalwahlen in Brasilien. Als Gewinner gelten politische Außenseiter in einer fragmentierten Parteienlandschaft. Diese Entwicklung könnte sich bei den nationalen Wahlen 2018 fortsetzen. Im Wahlkampf waren im Sinne der Korruptionsbekämpfung erstmals Firmenspenden verboten, wovon reiche Kandidaten profitierten. Daneben konnten Kandidaten der Pfingstkirchen Vorteile aus der politikfeindlichen Stimmung schlagen. Insgesamt zeigt sich deutlich, dass die politische und wirtschaftliche Krise das politische Vertrauen der Wähler nachhaltig erschüttert hat.
