Surge arresters are a suitable solution to protect electrical components against overvoltages. In combination with an IGBT it can act as a solid state breaker and contribute to a stable power grid. In this paper, the switching behavior of an IGBT with a parallel surge arrester is being analyzed and its impact on switching performance and losses is discussed.
