Abstract
Dealing with intermolecular energy-transfer processes it is an interesting question whether the energy is transferred by a wave-like (coherent) or by a diffusion-like (incoherent) process. From former studies it was known that the first excited singlet state of NaNO2 can be described as a Frenkel-type exciton. Monitoring the fluorescence resulting from the decay of this exciton one observes that at 4 K thermal population within the exciton band is not established during the exciton lifetime of 8 ns. By the use of fluorescence line narrowing, where the detection of the signal is delayed with respect to the excitation, it was possible to obtain the temperature dependence of the thermalization process. Even at 11.5 K it takes 35 ns until the excitons populate the whole band. The interpretation of the data in terms of exciton k memory leads to the conclusion that between 11 and 15 K the nature of the energy transfer changes from coherent to incoherent.
