Abstract in another language
Anthropology mainly examines work in nonindustrial/noncapitalist societies: Hunters and gatherers, cultivators, pastoralists, craftsmen. The discipline has also begun recently to investigate work in capitalist enterprises and to study the transformation of noncapitalistic into capitalistic work. Anthropology of work begins with the pioneering studies of Bücher and the holistic ethnography of his student Malinowski. Later, as a result of increasing specialization within anthropology, a variety or research traditions emerged. The ecological tradition examined work as interaction with nature. The technological tradition examined work as tool use. The institutional tradition examined work in the context of social institutions such as the household, slavery, or the capitalist firm. The cultural tradition examined work as a system of ideas or a shared cultural model, including definitions of work, emic theories of work, the values of the work ethic, and conceptions of work and identity. Most research has not been done on past but on present-day societies. Research methods (measurement, participant observation, interviews) vary with theoretical approach. Theories of work in anthropology focus on a unit of analysis midway between the individual actor and society. Future research should focus on the actor and society as well. An emerging topic in the anthropology of work is the division of labour under conditions of globalization
