Gas purging systems are an optional EAF technology for higher productivity, improved process control and safety, and lower production cost of EAF steelmaking. Bottom gas purging systems improve agitation of the steel melt, heat exchange and chemical homogeneity of the melt. As a result, the efficiencies of energy transfer, oxygen injection, and alloy addition increases in the EAF process. Typical values of process improvementsare 5-15 kWh/t electric energy savings and corresponding decrease of power-on time, and +0.5% yield. Recent case studies and new developments are presented. It is shown that gas purging systems are a modern EAF technology to increase energy efficiency with minimum pay-back period.
