Investigations on fluvial morphodynamic processes were carried out in the west African savannah of Borno State, Nigeria. Since precipitation characteristics are the most important input-factor in this context, the were observed in detail with an automatic siphon type precipitation recorder.
The analysis of 240 rainfall events, detected between 1991 and 1995, show distinct seasonal variations in duration, amount, and intensity of the rainfall. Despite the minor precipitation amount, especially in the beginning and at the end of the rainy season the intensity and erosivity of the rainfalls were revealed as very high. This seasonality is not confirmed when common erosional formulas (e.g. Wishmeier & Smith 1978) are used, because their calculations are based mainly on average values.

Für Untersuchungen zu fluvial-morphodynamischen Prozessen in der westafrikanischen Savanne (Borno State, Nigeria) waren exakte Informationen zur Niederschlagscharakteristik erforderlich. Mittels eines automatischen Niederschlagsschreibers wurden zwischen 1991 und 1995 rund 240 Niederschlagsereignisse aufgezeichnet. Die Ergebnisse lassen eine hohe saisonale Variabilität in Dauer, Menge und Intensität der Niederschläge erkennen. Obwohl die Niederschlagsmengen gering sind, weisen die Niederschlagsereignisse besonders zu Beginn und zum Ende der Regenzeit hohe Intensitäten und damit eine starke Erosivität auf. Bei Anwendung gebräuchlicher Erosionsformeln (bspw Wishmeier & Smith 1978) wir die Saisonalität jedoch nicht deutlich, da solche Berechnungen häufig mit Mittelwerten operieren.
