Abstract in another language

Methods to describe different hillwash sediments and soils derived from West African crystalline bedrocks (Benin):
In the Savanna regions of western Africa, formation of soils has been frequently interpreted to result from long-term bed-rock weathering under tropical climate conditions (saprolithic soils). In contrast, our investigations have shown that these soils often present eroded paleosoils and recent to subrecent soils developed in Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial sediment strata. Structure and genesis of such hillwash deposits and the typical soils found therein have been studied at inselbergs in the crystalline basement complex of Benin (western Africa). The results of fieldwork and laboratory analysis show small-scale variations in sedimentary structure and soil profile formation. The reasons for these differences are Quarternary morphogenesis but also soil erosion processes induced by human impact.
