For Ngugi therefore naming constitutes an important aspect of his representation of language, power and vision. Ngugi’s artistic and. A major trait of Ngugi’s Wizard of the Crow is the capacity to condition existence through naming and to provide the frame through which events, persons and processes are perceived. A name does not only address what is named, it redresses, restitutes it and re-defines its relationship with other entities in the world. We would therefore base this essay on the proclivity of the text /State to dispute, contest and reconstitute names in the negotiation of power relations within the society. From this perspective, a name is not only a noun, it is a metaphor, a conceit, an allegory and a narrative that determines the course/cause of the character/event along the plot of the text. To‘re-name’ is therefore to review, to revisit the trajectory, to re-emplot re-plot the narrative and to re-cast what is renamed in a new image. In Ngugi’s artistic frame, the name sets man into motion and through this, a new subject is born in the fulfillment of a destiny that is not only personal but especially communal. We approach the act of ‘naming’ in Wizard of the Crow as an important factor in the understanding of subjectivity, collective consciousness, textual tonality and artistic vision propounded in the text.
