Die beiden ehemals großen Volksparteien verlieren kontinuierlich an Wählerstimmen und Mitgliedern. Es fällt ihnen zunehmend schwer, bei jungen Bürgern Zustimmung und Nachwuchs zu gewinnen. Viele bewerten den Ist-Zustand, dass insbesondere junge Menschen sich wenig in der Politik engagieren, als dezidiert negativ. Eine alternative Interpretation ist jedoch naheliegender.
