Seit langen gibt es dreckige Luft in vielen deutschen Städten und die Verschmutzungsgrenzwerte werden allzu oft überschritten. Spätestens seit dem Dieselskandal wird über Maßnahmen debattiert, um die Umwelt- und Luftqualität zu verbessern. Fahrverbote für Dieselfahrzeuge und der Ausbau des öffentlichen Verkehrs sind dabei mit im Gespräch. Eine Stadtfahrtmaut als einfache, wirksame und ertragreiche Alternativmaßnahme zur Luftreinhaltung fehlt jedoch weitgehend in der Diskussion.
