Abstract in another language
Planar interdigital capacitors (IDC) covered with a thin Cr2O3 layer and a thick film of platinum-doped Na-ZSM-5 zeolite, a solid ionic conductor, are known to act as gas sensors for hydrocarbons. Their impedance spectrum typically consists of a dominating high-frequency semicircle and a low-frequency Warburg-like tail. Depending on the ambient hydrocarbon concentration and the device geometry, one or more semicircles appear in addition to the dominating one, and the Warburg-like low-frequency impedance grows strongly with rising gas concentration. Until now, this behavior has only been modeled phenomenologically by equivalent circuits involving, e. g., constant-phase elements (CPE) with a poor physical justification. We now present a novel model that explains the impedance spectrum and sensor effect from first-order physical principles. The model takes into account both bulk-conductivity effects (the ionic conductivity of the zeolite and the p-type semiconductor properties of the Cr2O3) and interface phenomena (blocking electrode characteristics of the zeolite/Cr2O3 interface and Schottky barrier at the Cr2O3/Au electrode interface).
