Abstract in another language
The “musici Italiani” made their first stop in Graz in 1756. It was also to be the last performance venue for the singers under the leadership of their impresario, Giovanni Francesco Crosa, a native of Piedmont. The troupe, with the opera entrepreneur, who was already notorious in his own time, had been touring Europe, more or less successfully, for years and, with its specialization in opera buffa, had contributed to making the still young genre of comic Italian opera known outside of Italy. Ensembles like Crosa’s are classified as “Wandertruppen” or “Pendleroper.” Both terms directly allude to the central phenomenon of mobility that was inherent in travelling ventures geared towards opera performances. The aim of this article is to characterize Crosa’s troupe as an exemplary case and at the same time to distill structural characteristics of mobile troupes, in general. In addition, the question of the extent to which specifics of mobile troupes changed the operas in their repertoire will be examined. Natale Resta’s Li tre cicisbei ridicoli (libretto: Carlo Antonio Vasini) is used as a case study. Since Resta himself was a member of Crosa’s opera troupe and, at least for a time, its musical director, it can be assumed that any adaptations of the operas are related to the composer.
