Abstract in another language

Writing is a prerequisite both for the production and circulation of academic knowledge. Moreover, it forms the essential link between these processes. Writing does not simply communicate and disseminate knowledge; rather, it organises and shapes its circulation. This chapter conceptualises writing as a practice that is simultaneously cognitive, embodied and material. This materiality of written texts is what allows them to circulate locally and globally. It is shown how writing, circulating and reading documents are fundamentally intertwined, from orienting perception by setting an appropriate mode of attention to organising the work itself – by keeping to-do lists, for example – to the actual distribution of knowledge.
