Abstract

Energy consumption statistics on countries of the Global North and the Global South support the idea that an increase of the standard of living and level of technology is coupled with a steady rise of the overall per capita energy consumption. What might be true on a national level might not be true on a household level.
Comparing household energy consumption in Kenya, Germany and Spain leads to the surprising result that the amount of energy currently used per capita in households in Kenya (0.35 toe pc) is estimated to be even higher as in a country like Spain (0.17 toe pc) or Germany (0.23 toe pc), if energy for heating is disregarded. The same is true for the household CO2 emissions in the three countries. The use of firewood or charcoal as main cooking fuel is the main driver for the overall household consumption in Kenya; the findings should therefore be transferable to a number of countries where firewood and charcoal consumption is on a comparable high level like in Kenya. This might be the case for a number of African and South-East Asian countries.
Looking at individual households in Mumias town in Western Kenya confirms what has been found on the macro level and reveals that also within Kenya the level of wealth is not determining the household energy consumption level. The ethnographic case study offers additional insights in daily life practices giving explanations of figures found in larger survey based studies.
The analysis shows that also in Kenya energy transition does not only mean an increasing energy consumption and production throughout all sectors. It is necessary to look at the different sectors and technologies used and their interplay, as well as at social situations and preferences of people.
