Abstract in another language

Given cities’ rising environmental problems and increasing food insecurity, innovative organizational endeavors such as urban agriculture present a chance for ecosystem services and additional food production. However, urban spaces are hostile as they jeopardize the availability of air, water, or soil. While digital technologies enable the management of scarce resources in traditional agricultural contexts, little is known about their applicability in urban agriculture endeavors. A multi-layer taxonomy that classifies digital technologies facilitating successful agriculture in urban environments is proposed. Scientific and practical evaluations involving 25 experts demonstrate the taxonomy’s validity and reveal 22 readiness factors for smart urban agriculture. Pinpointing how organizations can increase their readiness to leverage opportunities of digital technologies in urban agriculture, this study offers the basis for conceptualizing smart urban agriculture and provides insights into exploiting its benefits.
