Seizing opportunities presented by digital technology through digital innovation is an important driver of competitive advantage for organizations. However, there is an imbalance in our knowledge of digital innovation approaches, leaning towards a market-based view. This poses a problem for lower-tier actors in supply chains, like producers, that have limited customer access and are subject to cost pressures from retailers. Against this backdrop, we adopt a resource-based view on digital innovation and introduce the concept of resource-based digital innovation, emphasizing the potential of collaborative digital resource creation. Based on a consortium research project with three dairies, we designed (1) a digital innovation that creates digital resources and (2) a conceptual framework comprising five building blocks of resource-based digital innovation. Our findings link the existing bodies of knowledge on digital resources and digital innovation, inspire scholars to further explore resource-based digital innovation, and guide practitioners in the creation of digital resources.
